BASIC OBJECTIVES
In accordance with increased funding provided by the State Legislature, coordinate and implement additional programs on behalf of Dade County Public Schools, in conjunction with the Dade County State Attorney’s Office to address the ignificant truancy problem in Dade County. This individual will be called upon to render opinions regarding the necessity to seek legal action against parents of truant children. Work actively with the District Coordinator for the Bureau of Special Programs in the development of new policy in the areas of truancy.
JOB TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Oversees truancy prevention program, working together with Dade County State Attorney’s Office.
2. Renders opinions as to the necessity to seek legal action against parents of truant children.
3. Works actively with the District Coordinator for Department of Special Programs to implement and develop new policy with regards to truancy.
4. Collaborates with duly authorized/related committees, advisory groups and task forces.
5. Organizes and coordinates related workshops, presentations, meetings, conferences, seminars, and/or projects.
6. Prepares memoranda distributed to School Board members, representatives from State Attorney’s Office and representatives with local law enforcement.
7. Appears before juvenile court judges in regards to truant children involved in juvenile courts as either delinquent or dependent children.
8. Performs other duties as assigned by District Coordinator for Department of Special Programs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This is sedentary work which requires the following physical activities: sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, and visual acuity. The worker is subject to outside environment, however the worker spends a great deal of time inside.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college; a minimum of three (3) years professional experience with the juvenile court system, as well as community organizations dealing with delinquent and dependent children. A comprehensive understanding of both the juvenile court system and community providers available to assist in coordination of services to families with truant children.
2. Juris Doctorate from an accredited university or college. (This position does not require a valid Florida teacher’s certificate.)
3. Strong foundation and familiarity with legal system relating to both juveniles and adult perpetrators of crimes against minor children, as well as general laws regarding truancy.
4. Ability to interpret legislation and develop policy based on those interpretations.
5. Demonstrate skills in community organization and resource development.
6. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
7. Possession of human relations skills necessary for success in working with grant development and funding agencies, school administrative staffs, support staff, community volunteers, students, parents, community based organizations, local law enforcement, judges, state attorneys, and public defenders.

Starting Salary: $58,134.00*
*(includes 6% Referendum Retirement Accruing Supplement of $3,003)
New hires may be eligible to receive credit for verified years of experience, which can enhance their starting salary.
